This wasn't just a race. It was a mission. A mission to represent the strength and struggle of countless veterans and their families, and to shine a light on the support needed for those adjusting to life after service.

           Endurance Redefined

Starting in the wilderness of Swedish Lapland, the team battled extreme sub-zero temperatures, biting wind chill, and a vast, snow-laden landscape. Originally opting for skis to cover the icy terrain, the team quickly adapted their strategy due to the overwhelming resistance and harsh snow conditions. Much of the 500km journey was completed on foot, hauling their own sleds (pulks) loaded with all essential gear—tents, supplies, survival kits—each weighing over 30kg.

Sleep was minimal, conditions brutal. Each day brought fresh physical pain, frostbite risk, and the psychological strain of such an unforgiving environment. But the team endured, driven by their cause and the bond forged by shared service and sacrifice.

           Veterans for Veterans

The drive behind Project Fire & Ice has always been clear—to support veterans through action, not just words. The team’s commitment has already raised over £97,000 for SSAFA, one of the UK’s leading Armed Forces charities, with the goal of reaching £100,000 now firmly in sight.

This mission was about more than just fundraising. It was about showing the world the strength, courage, and unity that exists within the veteran community. Through each freezing kilometre, the message was clear: no one gets left behind.

Brian Wood MC, decorated for bravery during his military service, has long used his platform to support veteran welfare and mental health. In this challenge, alongside Fox, Kane, and Hinett—each a veteran with their own harrowing yet heroic story—Brian proved once again what purpose-fueled resilience can achieve.

“This wasn’t about personal glory,” Brian reflected at the finish line. “It was about the men and women we’ve served alongside. It was about giving back—and pushing ourselves to the edge to remind others they’re not alone.”

The finish line may have been in Sweden, but the impact of their journey is global. Thousands followed their progress on Instagram and social media, inspired by their grit and overwhelmed by their dedication.

The 500km Ultra race is divided into two stages, the first of 185km, the second of 315km. Following these routes the team will cross twice into the Arctic circle - the land of the midnight sun, and, of course, where one might find the home of Father Christmas.

           The Route

The Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra will take place on snowmobile trails in Swedish Lapland. The start and finish for the 500 km races is in the small town of Överkalix, in the Swedish province of Norbotten.

The 500km route is divided into two loops, the first loop, 185km in length, heads north from Överkalix, crossing into the Arctic Circle, before heading back to town. From there the second loop of 315 km begins, this time heading north-west, and again crossing into the Arctic Circle. On both loops the team will travel on and through snow- and ice-covered rivers, lakes and forests.

           The Hazards

Due to the extreme cold that can be experienced, the distance, and the difficult nature of the route, the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra is considered one of the toughest ultra races in the world.

It is impossible to say in advance what the trail conditions will be like. Dead winter in the Swedish Lapland can bring just about any kind of conditions. If our team is lucky they will be trekking over old snow with clear skies and beautiful starlight and even the Aurora Borealis. If our team is less lucky they will be facing strong winds, low visibility, and a path covered in fresh, deep, snow.

The trail will be marked. However, Arctic conditions can descend at any moment, and fresh snow, or winter winds can make it easy to lose the route markers. All team members will therefore be equipped with GPS direction finders.

Of course, with four British veterans forming the team, we expect them to have no problem with navigating the terrain, or facing down even the toughest weather! It can't be worse than Brecon...

Fortunately for our team, and the other Arctic Ultra competitors, there are several checkpoints scattered along the route which can provide medical checks, hot drinks and food, and a place to rest. These are located about every 50km or so.

Medical checks will be conducted to ensure the team are not suffering from frostbite, or exhaustion. There will be a chance to refill bottles with tea, coffee, hot-chocolate and water, and some checkpoints will have wi-fi, allowing the team to talk to friends and family back home. Most checkpoints will have places to sleep indoors, but a couple will not, meaning any sleep has to be grabbed whilst under a tent or bivvy-bag.

They worked tirelessly on this project to include getting the sponsorship donations together by approaching successful local business people he knows through working as a taxi driver for nearly 30 years together.

I originally thought I was on a fastball school assembly appearance but then I seen so many people from the Whitehill & Bordon Community around the NEW mural of remembrance ‘Woody’s Walk’. As I walked out of the building everyone started cheering and then I seen Ben Shepard smiling. I still didn’t really know what was going on. Then I seen the artwork from the most talented Ryan Brudenell that reduced me to tears ''.

Produced by Expectation for BBC Two, the feature-length single is written by Bafta-winner Robert Jones (Murder, Party Animals).

The drama richly explores the effect Brian’s experience has not just on him, but also on his family. This includes his father and ex-soldier, Gavin, played by Alex Ferns (Chernobyl, The Batman), and his wife Lucy, played by Leah McNamara (Normal People, Vikings).

Danny Boy (w/t) is an urgent and thought-provoking drama that questions what we ask of those who fight - and kill - for their country.

Anthony Boyle says: “I’m thrilled to be working with Sam Miller on Robert Jones’ phenomenal script, and telling Brian’s extraordinary story. We get to explore not just the realities of war, but how they can come back to haunt you.”

Toby Jones says: “Robert has written an extraordinarily compelling, intelligent and nuanced script, and it’s a real honour to be working with Danny Boy’s exceptional cast and creative team to bring it to the screen.”

Writer Robert Jones says: “Here’s a man who won a medal for valour, but whose toughest test was the scrutiny that followed. External scrutiny, and soul searching too - Brian Wood’s story is a fascinating one for a writer to explore. It’s been a great privilege to work with producers of such distinction and I’m really delighted we’re going into production with Sam Miller at the helm and a terrific cast and crew.”

Director Sam Miller adds: “I’m very excited to be telling this story featuring the Battle of Danny Boy and the subsequent fallout, both personally and politically, for Brian and others.

"The film is a candid and subtle delve into a troubled sequence in recent history that sets up an undertow threatening all those involved. The intimate questions raised about the nature of soldiering and the political ramifications are never more prescient. I’m personally extremely pleased to be working with BBC Two and Colin and Sue's team at Expectation, and a wonderful cast headed by Anthony Boyle, Toby Jones, Leah McNamara and Alex Ferns.”

Sue Horth and Colin Barr, executive producers for Expectation say: “Robert’s script is a razor-sharp examination of one of our most urgent and morally challenging questions: when is killing an act of war and when is it an act of murder?

"The story of Colour Sergeant Brian Wood and human rights lawyer, Phil Shiner - who accused him of war crimes - goes straight to the heart of that question and it’s an incredible honour to be able to tell it. Bringing it to life for BBC Two with Sam and Simon and an amazing cast only adds to that sense of privilege.”

Patrick Holland, Controller of BBC Two, says: “Robert Jones’ exquisite script plunges us into a world of profound ethical complexity, exploring one man’s experience as he moves from decorated war hero to one suspected of war crimes. The team at Expectation has attracted a stellar cast and crew and I couldn’t be more excited about the film they will produce."

Directed by Sam Miller (I May Destroy You, Luther) and produced by Simon Lewis (Three Girls, The Nest), Danny Boy (w/t) was commissioned by Patrick Holland and Piers Wenger for BBC Two. Executive Producers are Colin Barr and Susan Horth (Our War, Damilola: Our Loved Boy) for Expectation and Lucy Richer (Small Axe, The Salisbury Poisonings) and Clare Sillery (Once Upon A Time in Iraq, The Last Survivors) for BBC Two. BBC Studios will distribute Danny Boy (w/t) internationally.

Brian Wood was awarded Military Cross, one of Britain’s highest awards for gallantry in combat, following his courageous leadership under enemy fire in Iraq. Brian had to make frequent life-or-death decisions in a serious battle situation, and successfully lead his unit to victory without sustaining any serious casualties themselves.

Brian makes no secret about his struggles after leaving the Armed Forces, which were only impounded by the public inquiry following his time in Iraq. The inquiry was irrevocably dismissed and proved to be completely vindicated by the inquiry in 2017, following which Brian has become a best-selling author, Double Crossed: A Code of Honour, A Complete Betrayal, and now regularly gives engaging and inspirational talks to exclusive audiences, including military personnel about his experiences.

TALK WITH DERBY COUNTY FC

Brian Wood MC talks to Derby County Football Club about teamwork and tenacity.

Brian Wood MC talks to Derby County Football Club about teamwork and tenacity

Phoenix Sport & Media Group Ambassador Brian Wood MC was recently at Derby County Football Club speaking to Academy players on the importance of teamwork and tenacity, and how important it is to understand the club’s values.

Awarded the Military Cross for his gallant, heroic, selfless acts on the frontline to standing trial accused of war crimes, Brian Wood MC has an incredible story to share.

Brian’s career started in football. He started off on the Chelsea Football Club schoolboy programme, and was delighted to put his boots back on in the morning and to join in a training session with former player Craig Short. Former Premier League captain Short is now an U23’s coach for DCFC. Brian described Short as a “man-mountain” after contact with his tackle bag!

In the afternoon, Brian (or “Woody” as he is more affectionately known to the Phoenix team) presented an inspiring speech to the players.

Brian told his story and how, at the age of 23, he was thrust into the front line in Iraq at the infamous Battle of Danny Boy. Ambushed, he led a charge across open ground with at least 20 insurgents firing at five soldiers. On his return, he was awarded the Military Cross. However, Brian's story had only just begun. Struggling to integrate back into family life, he suffered from PTSD. Then, five years later, a letter arrived summoning him to testify at the Al-Sweady enquiry into allegations of war crimes by British soldiers during the Iraq invasion of 2003.

We’ll leave the rest of the story to be told by Brian, but DCFC were walked through his incredible journey and taken to the heart of close quarter battle. Brian also shared his unique methodology - the “Woody Way” - which draws on his life experiences to inspire and educate his audience on the importance of core values of honesty, resilience and optimism.

“The worst experiences in life can teach us the best lessons in life” said Brian. “ As I walked through the DCFC academy doors with Craig Short I instantly saw excellence. The first thing I read was ‘talent alone is not enough’. This is very true and also parallels with the military way of thinking. Meeting the players I instantly got a sense of what the club really means to them and nothing was taken for granted. That was refreshing. Putting my boots on and taking part in a training session was brilliant but my highlight was sharing my story on emotional resilience. Along with the academy director Darren Wassall, we spoke about the importance of values and what they mean. In a military institution you are driven ona daily basis by your values. I believe if you understand values you understand the bigger picture and it will help you achieve your goals / mission. An incredible time spent with DCFC.”

Craig Short reported that the talk had been both valuable and memorable for the Academy. He said:

“I have come across many inspirational speakers in my career but Brian’s story and presentation was genuinely the best I have seen. Young players can be very hard for some outside speakers to engage with at times but Brian held the room for over an hour with his recollections and amazing story on human endeavour. Brian aligned his speech with our own academy values and principles which made it very relevant and inspiring for our academy players.”

In July 2019 it was announced that Brian had been given the green light for a new movie, based on his award winning autobiography, Double- Crossed. Brian is currently continuing his tour, working on a new book and is a key member of the PSM Training team, who are keen to help increase opportunities for government funded apprenticeships for military veterans, corporations and sports teams.

Phoenix Sport & Media Group are incredibly proud to work with Brian. He embodies our own core values of trust, honesty and integrity and is one of the most motivational and inspirational speakers we have encountered. He not only has an incredible story, he is great guy to work with. We are proud to have Brian on the Phoenix team!

1917 is an epic World War I drama, following the journey of two young British soldiers, Blake and Schofield, who are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers – Blake’s own brother among them.

What part does mental and physical fitness play in your life?

For me, it has been crucial in helping me tackle some of the toughest situations I’ve faced.

           Train hard, fight easy

The British military has been on operations for two decades. For a long time, we’ve been fighting two wars simultaneously. An operational tour is testing to any solider, but repeated close-combat tours over a decade is challenging to even the most resilient.

As a leader of men, I was a big believer in the motto: “train hard, fight easy”. Here’s why.

I knew that if my men were trained and physically fit, they had a better chance of survival – should the worst happen to them. Their bodies would be strong enough to either pull through that crucial first hour after an injury. Or, they would be strong enough to physically carry another person out of the firefight.

           Dig deep

The desert of Southern Iraq and the green zone of Helmand province were unforgiving environments to fight in. Often, this would be compounded by the heat of summer. This environment places a real demand on the body. I knew that when my men got tired, they wouldn’t be as effective. This is where mental fitness was key. Having the right mindset was crucial to survival.

I remember applying mental resilience when I was tasked to resupply Cimic House in Iraq 2004. Cimic House was an isolated outpost in the centre of Al-Amarah that saw some of the heaviest fighting in the whole of the Iraq campaign. It needed constant resupply, particularly of ammunition and water. On one particular supply run, we were hit hard by the local militia and it took hours to move even a short distance across the city. By the time we got to Cimic House, I was fatigued from both the heat and physical exertion, and mentally drained.

I knew we still had to fight our way back out of Al-Amarah and I had to dig deep, both physically and mentally, to motivate myself and the soldiers under my command. Whilst it can be taxing to be a leader at times, in this case I drew strength from my position of command, and point-blank refused to lower my standards and let down my section.

           How do you develop resilience?

From my own experiences, I believe staying strong, developing good habits and always looking for ways to grow. But you can only grow and develop your own resilience when you’re outside your comfort zone. For me, it was battling through Al-Amarah, but for you it could be learning a new skill or running a marathon.

And what happens when the challenge is over? It’s important to reward yourself or your team for maintaining good morale and being prepared for the worst course of action. This moment of reflection helps to embed mental and physical resilience in your (or your team’s) character.

           The bottom line

I believe that mental and physical resilience are crucial to help you withstand life’s toughest challenges. They both go together hand in hand. Everyone will need to apply both sometime within their lifetime. Hopefully my story will help inspire you to develop yours.

Hilary Meredith Solicitors has appointed war hero and best-selling author Brian Wood as an Ambassador for the firm.

At the age of 23, Brian Wood was thrust into the front line in Iraq, in the infamous Battle of Danny Boy. Ambushed, he led a charge across open ground with insurgents firing at just five soldiers. On his return, he was awarded the Military Cross.

In his recently published, best-selling memoir, Double Crossed: A Code of Honour, A Complete Betrayal, Brian speaks powerfully and movingly about the three battles in his life, from being ambushed with no cover, to the mental battle to adjust at home, to being falsely accused of hideous war crimes.

Commenting on Brian Wood’s appointment as an Ambassador, Hilary Meredith, Chair of Hilary Meredith Solicitors and winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 Manchester Legal Awards said:

This week James O'Brien is joined by Brian Wood, a former Colour Sergeant who was awarded the Military Cross, one of Britain’s highest awards for gallantry in combat, following his courageous leadership under enemy fire in Iraq. However, five years later he was wrongly accused of war crimes. In this episode, Brian discusses his love affair with the army, the public enquiry into the Battle of Danny Boy and how his resilience through these experiences led him to becoming a best selling author and public speaker, through sharing his experiences from the battlefield and suggesting ways that the lessons he has learnt can be applied in the corporate world.

Join Brian Wood MC as he discusses his military career with former soldier Johnny Mercer MP.

At the age of 23, Brian Wood was thrust into the front line of the Iraq War at the infamous Battle of Danny Boy.

When his unit was ambushed by insurgents, he led a charge across open ground under heavy fire. His men emerged with no serious casualties and saved the lives of many other soldiers in the process. This act of outstanding bravery earned Brian the Military Cross.

But those same events led to a decade of trauma. Brian suffered from PTSD and struggled to fit back into civilian life. He was then summoned to give evidence at an inquiry into allegations of war crimes by British soldiers during the Iraq campaign.

After years of public shame, these accusations were shown to be false and justice was finally served.

At this event, Brian will be interviewed by Johnny Mercer MP about his military career and life after leaving the forces.

Wine and non-alcoholic drinks will be served on arrival.

This powerful, important memoir shows the personal and human cost of war and the full inside story from the battle ground and the courtroom floor.

At the age of 23, Brian Wood was thrust into the front line in Iraq, in the infamous Battle of Danny Boy. Ambushed, he led a charge across open ground with insurgents firing at just five soldiers. On his return, he was awarded the Military Cross. But Brian's story had only just begun.

Struggling to re-integrate into family life, he suffered from PTSD. Then, five years later, a letter arrived: it summoned him to give evidence at the Al-Sweady Inquiry into allegations of war crimes by British soldiers during the Iraq invasion of 2003.

After years of public shame, Brian took the stand and delivered a powerful testimony, and following the tense inquiry room scenes, justice was finally served. Phil Shiner, the lawyer who made the false accusations, was struck off and stripped of an honorary doctorate.

In this compelling memoir, Brian speaks powerfully and movingly about the three battles in his life, from being ambushed with no cover, to the mental battle to adjust at home, to being falsely accused of hideous war crimes. It's a remarkable and dark curve which ends with his honour restored but, as he says, it was too little, too late.

Bremont is proud to enter into a partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) honouring Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Through this partnership, Bremont have become the sole luxury watch producer allowed to legitimately use the signs, symbols and Heraldic Badges of all three services. This marks the first time that civilians can purchase official Bremont Military timepieces. Consequently, Bremont have released a new military inspired range of watches incorporating the emblems of the Royal Navy, British Army and the Royal Air Force. The Armed Forces Collection draws inspiration from the original ‘Dirty Dozen’ watches, a series of timepieces commissioned for the British Army during World War II when Britain’s Ministry of Defence needed watches to issue to military personnel.

On Thursday 18th April the Security Risk Management Alumni will be hosting our first Networking evening of 2019. This event is taking place at The Frontline Club, Paddington, London, where you will have the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals from across both the public and private Security Sectors in the comfort of an ideally positioned location. We are honoured and delighted to welcome Brian Wood MC to the SRM Alumni stage as our Guest Speaker for the night. At the age of 23, Brian Wood was thrust into the front line in Iraq, in the Infamous Battle of Danny Boy. Ambushed, he led a bayonet charge across open ground with at least 20 insurgents firing at just five soldiers. On his return, he was awarded the Military Cross, BUT Brian's story had only just begun. Struggling to re-integrate into family life, he suffered from PTSD. Then, five years later, a letter arrived: it summoned him to testify at the Al-Sweady enquiry into allegations of war crimes by British soldiers during the Iraq invasion of 2003. The rest of the story, we’ll leave Brian to tell on the night.

We kindly ask Guests to arrive at The Frontline Club promptly at around 7 - 7.30pm, where you will receive welcome drinks and be able to listen to the welcoming speech from a member of the SRM Alumni team. We will then invite Brian Wood to the stage where I’m sure he will give you one of the most Motivational/Inspirational talks you would have heard. He's a great guy, who has an incredible story and you will NOT be disappointed. There will be a further selection of complimentary Drinks available (Beer, Wine and Soft Drinks) as well as canapes throughout the night. Once this runs dry, there will be a cash bar available with the evening ending when the venue closes at 11:30pm. Tickets for this event to SRM Alumni members are £20 each and £30 to Guests, both including Vat.

At the age of 23, Brian Wood was thrust into the front line in Iraq, in the infamous Battle of Danny Boy. Ambushed, he led a bayonet charge across open ground with at least 20 insurgents firing at just five soldiers. On his return, he was awarded the Military Cross. But Brian's story had only just begun. Struggling to re-integrate into family life, he suffered from PTSD. Then, five years later, a letter arrived- it summoned him to testify at the Al-Sweady Inquiry into allegations of war crimes by British soldiers during the Iraq invasion of 2003.

After five years of public shame, Brian took the stand and his powerful testimony led to full vindication. Phil Shiner, the lawyer who made the accusations, was struck off.
